Emissions Potential using Ethanol Blends in IC Engines

The EPA and the CARB have extensively studied the emissions changes when ethanol blends are used in IC engines.
1. CO2 emissions and potential for reduction
The situation as it stands today is shown in the chart below. The model year (MY) 2016 car standard (solid black line in chart below), which depends on the vehicle footprint, is currently exceeded by every make and model of existing IC vehicles.

Vittorio Manente in his PhD Thesis from Lund Univ. in 2010 experimented with a research engine to see what the potential of various fuels could be.
